Squirrels 4/Larry Baffled

Yesterday we continued our fruitless attempt to keep the squirrels off of the seed cake. We were under a limb, which is about as high as the house, attempting to throw a stick with a rope over the limb. We figured that we can hang the feeder from the rope and the squirrels couldn't get to it. It took about 10 or more throws to get the stick over the limb. Once it was over we had to re-position the rope with the pole trimmer. The rope of the pole trimmer kept getting tangled with our rope. That was mess. Then Larry finally threw the stick in the right place but it didn't get over the limb because he was standing on the line. I was so glad that my neighbors weren't witnessing this.

Eventually everything worked and we got the feeder to dangle from the line. This morning we watched a squirrel on a limb about 10 feet higher than the feeder, try to be a trapeze artist. He leaped from the limb, missed the seed cake and drop to the ground. Nice try fellow!

When Larry looked out the window a little later, there was a squirrel on the seed cake. If you don't succeed at first...try, try again. A philosophy held by both squirrels and Larry.

His friends are sending him info on how to build a better baffle.

To be continued...

Squirrels 3/Larry 0

The squirrels are winning the baffle wars.
'
Here is the 3rd iteration of baffle over the seed cake holder.
Next we are going to dangle the feeder from a high limb.
Let's hope the 4th attempt deters them.

Larry admitted that he is feeling sort of sorry for the squirrels this year. The oak trees have shut down on acorn production and the squirrels are really hungry. The average oak tree produces 250 pounds of acorns a year. This year they are averaging 75 pounds. Larry has been collecting acorns and bringing them to the backyard for them.

But yet
He would rather be feeding birds.

This morning we had some special visitors to our feeders.
The squirrels left the seed cake long enough for a Carolina Wren to show up.

and on the ground was a Fox Sparrow.

Our feeders have been a hot bed of birding activity in this week. Juncos, Titmice, Nuthatches, Carolina Chickadees, Goldfinches, Mourning Doves, Blue Jays and the occasional Downy Woodpecker.

It was 12 degrees here in Whiting, NJ this morning. We had the 2 cats under the down comforter with us this morning. We were all warm and snugglely. Glad I didn't have to leave the house today.

An all new me, all the time.

I have abandoned my sophisticated urban domicile to be a suburban piney hausfrau in an active adult community. One of the members of your household has to be over 55 to live here and it's not me not me. As Larry says, I am in on a pass!

Part of my new suburban life style was to purchase a new set of wheels!
Here they are, my really cool, fuchsia and lime green bicycle.

I just need streamers and baseball cards on the spokes to complete the look.

My first big ride was 9.56 miles to Harry Wrights Lake and back. I also rode 8.2 miles just around the neighborhood. It's very strange to get on a bike after 25 years. Glad that I have 2 years of spin classes under my belt. I have much more power and endurance because of spin.

We keep finding interesting places here on the south shore of NJ. One of them was the Barnegat Branch Rail Trail. I was pleased to learn that there is a movement in the country to re-purpose abandon railroad lines. When finished (if ever, due to political fighting between the townships) there will be a continuous 15 miles paved bicycle/walking path from Tom's River to Barnegat, NJ. The Barnegat branch is 3.1 miles long and I rode the complete trail twice.
The first problem to solve was how transport the bicycle. It's still a big pain to get the bike on the car rack, but it's worth the effort.

Showing off for a photo op.

Surprisingly, the Pine Barrens are full of lots of interesting places to go and things to do. One place I read about was the fields of Pygmy pines and I had to go there and see them. The pine trees there full grown are only about 3 -4 feet high.
Standing tall with the pygmies. When I bought my bicycle the tech said... I have this pinkish color. I said COOL!

There was another interesting place, Bamber Lake not far from the house.

We've been birding in Whitesbog. Whitesbog is where the high bush blueberry (the ones we eat) was originally cultivated. I wanted to say commercial blueberry, but that sounds like they have industrial applications. We've been seeing Tundra Swans in the flooded bogs and some ducks, but not many.

We have many vistors to our backyard.
He was right out side the bedroom window this fall.

Hanging around the over 55 development.

And of course
there are SQUIRRELS!

Larry has been thinking of ways to deter the squirrels from munching on the seed cake. He created a baffle out of mik containers and soda bottles. It was a very creative modern art sculpture. But for the squirrels, it was handy for climbing and hanging.

Next he bought a small baffle.

Not Baffled.

Baffled.
Today we are off to Lowes for rope and maybe a larger baffle.

One of the many reasons we moved here was the proximity to Cape May. We are about 90 miles away from Cape May State Park. This New Year's day Cape May lived up to it's reputation as one of the country's best birding hot spots. We signed up for the Cape May Bird Observatory's 1st of the year field trip and saw 66 birds. We saw the usual wintering birds and a couple of rarities. We didn't expect to see a Dicksisel, Bell's Vireo or a Marbled Godwit, but we did. A nice way to start the year off.
Many thanks to the CMBO guides for a great day.
Also to Mother Nature for the 50 degree, relatively calm day.

I was really happy the I am starting the new year off weighing less than last Jan 1st, not by much, but still, I am beating the odds by keeping the weight off. There is a very good article in the 1/1/12 NY Times magazine describing the struggle of maintaining weight loss. I thought I was crazy that I obsess about food all the time, weigh myself every day, sometimes twice a day, still need to journal and weigh and measure after 5 years. As the article points out, those behaviors are normal for many of us "losers".

Brown University is conducting research on the subject and I submitted my stats for consideration to be part of the study.

Time to get off my butt and shop!

14 Days in the Pine Barrens

Since we bought our house on August 15th, there has been an earthquake and a hurricane. What next? Locust?

We have been having a real fun time sitting out in the backyard watching our bird feeders. Over the past few days we have purchased 8 new ones and placed them all around the yard. Then on Saturday morning, we took everything into the garage to make way for Hurricane Irene. Yesterday we started to put things back.

I have been taking photos of the activity around the feeders.
We started with one lone hummer, then there were 3 fighting over the feeder. So we bought 2 more feeders. I make the sugar water for them. The recipe is really easy, 4 parts water to 1 part sugar. Stir into boiling water till clear, let cool.

This was the view from my bedroom window this morning.
A Goldfinch (or as they are called in Crestwood, a yellow Canary) and a House Finch.

We went to Lowes this afternoon, bought a new kitchen faucet, a new air gap for the dishwasher and then more stuff for the birds! Suet, a baffle to deter squirrels from the big feeder, and more bird seed!

A Real Housewife from New Jersey or Proud to be a Piney, from my nose to my hiney!

The storage room is empty, the garage is full.

The painters are about 50% done.

The new dishwasher will be installed on Monday.

The Cable, Internet and phone are all connected.

The floors are ordered.

We got our dump sticker and the welcome kit from the community.

Met our neighbors, Jerry, Dwight, Sue, Virginia, Jerry, Jane and Mrs. K (watch out for her

she's the crazy one!).

Learned how to use an automatic water sprinkler...

Does that fulfill the suburbanite prerequisite?

Welcome to Village 5!

Every time water runs in the house, the meter ticks.

Every tick is another item input into the cash register at...

Sears, Bed Bath and Beyond, Petsmart, Costco, Lowe's, Home Depot, Super Foodtown (not so Super), Shoprite, Amazon.com, Avalon Carpet, Rabbit Movers, A Brush of Class and Whiting Auto Center (a lonsman in the Pine Barren-Nu? who would have thunk it!)

We are finding stuff we forgot we had. I found Yvette Moo-Moo, the cow windsock I had hanging up in the bathroom of the old house. There's a microwave I forgot about. Larry found an antique wash stand.

The yellow vanity top in the bathroom actually is mildly tolerable because the walls surrounding it are painted purple. The green and purple paint in the kitchen look great.

Next major job will be the floors.

After that new windows!

more to come

stay tuned.

Walk on the Wild(life management) Side...

LEAVING BROOKLYN!
You know how our esteemed Borough President feels about that!

Larry and I are trading in the wildlife in NYC for the wildlife of Whiting, NJ.

*** 35 B Sunset Rd
Whiting, NJ
My new backyard will be a 1200 acre WMA.

The actual transfer of ownership is on Monday the 15th, but the fun has already begun.

I have been packing, unpacking, repacking and
Shopping, Shopping, Shopping!!!!!
I might as well just sign my paycheck over to Ikea.

Larry might be feeling a bit insecure about moving.

But when the path to the 1200 Acre WMA area is just outside the kitchen door...

View of the kitchen door and side of house.
It's really hard to have reservations about trading in 678 sq. feet on the 3rd floor of a walk up for 1200 acre backyard.

But in the meantime,
the apartment is beginning to look like a warehouse. There are boxes everywhere.

I brought a lot of boxes to the storage room for the movers to move next week,
I never know what I am going to find in there when I go!
Don't Larry!
I'll get Dwight Goodbear from the car and everything will be all right.

Whew! that was a close call, got there just in a nick of time.

Blast from the past!

For the past 5 years most of my stuff and some of Larry's has been sitting in a storage room in Staten Island. When the movers asked me what was in the room, I forgot. I just knew I had boxes and boxes of stuff.

Good-bye stuff see you next week in NJ!

One of Larry's biggest complaints about me is that I don't know right from left and I have no sense of direction. The last time we went for a walk in the WMA behind the house, we missed the path to go back to the car. All the trails look the same

I was determined to find a way so that I wouldn't need search parties to find me in the woods.
Thanks to Costco I will always be able to find my way out of the woods.
Where's the car???
I don't know, let me check?

I feel much better now.

One of the things I know I am going to like about Whiting, NJ is the pick your own vegetable farms. I bought fresh fruit and vegetables from the farm stand last week.
$16.74 for 4 shopping bags of just picked produce.

unknown variety of winter squash

some of the fresh vegetables from the farm stand.

Monday, all the pieces should start falling into place...
Let the good times roll!

to be con't....
